Travel equals Self-Care

Oftentimes people reach out to us about embarking on a new adventure and the conversations often start the same way - "I need to book a vacation". This is interesting, because it’s not just the vacation that they usually need.

When people reach that point where they need a vacation, they have reached the point where they need an escape from their day-to-day reality. Going on a vacation, whether it’s just a long weekend or a two-week long trip, can have an almost magical effect on one's mental, emotional, and physical health, on top of other things.

Here are just a few reasons why taking a vacation is one of the best forms of self-care:

Tip #1 - Changing your surroundings and removing yourself from your mundane day-to-day will make you feel invigorated.

Change it up a bit! Once you have a trip booked, you might spend every day looking out your office window, checking your countdown to when you get to take a break from the daily grind.

Tip #2 - Our bodies need time to truly recover from everything it supports us through in our everyday lives. Sometimes, sadly sleeping in on the weekends doesn't cover it.

Taking a vacation should mean no schedule, no commitments and rest whenever you feel like it. Rest might not mean a nap everyday and sleeping until noon. It might mean reading a book instead of emails or relaxing in a beach chair and staring at the ocean instead of rocking a crying baby in a chair. Your mind and body needs rest!

Tip #3 - Stepping outside your comfort zone, even if it is just a toe outside the box, will allow you to learn something new about yourself.

You never truly know how you will react to something until you experience it yourself. You might think you won't enjoy some aspects of traveling, but you just don't know until you try it.

"If you can't beat the fear. Just do it scared." – Glennon Doyle

Tip #4 - The old saying is true; you will never know how much you love something till it’s gone. Leaving your home for a couple of days or weeks will remind you how much you love your home and the things and people you left behind.

One of my favorite things about traveling is often not even the trip itself. It's that first step back into my home, seeing my dog's tail wag, hugging my family, the smell of home and the feel of my own bed! Awww. Traveling allows you to experience this immeasurable gratitude and appreciate the things you love most in life when you feel its absence.

Tip #5 - By fully immersing yourself in an area, you will learn so much about the area’s culture and history - travel is knowledge.

It's amazing to walk in the footsteps of someone else. When you are in the need for self-care, sometimes a great form of therapy is forgetting about yourself altogether and go learn about someone else. Learn about other communities and how they live, work and even hear about their perspective of us.

It's eye opening, humbling and life changing.

"“Sometimes, you just have to clear your head and get out to see other things. It is very important to be nourished. I love to go to museums and galleries, I like to see theatre, film, dance – anything creative. It doesn’t promise you inspiration, but it nourishes your creative soul, and that’s good.”

— Marc Jacobs

Final & Most Important Tip - Remember, no matter where you are in this universe, you are still you!

Whether you are in Iowa, walking the Great Wall of China or chilling in Bora Bora, you are still YOU. When you come home you are likely coming home to the same house, job, husband and kids. But through your travel experience, you have gained more perspective, gratitude and appreciation for yourself and the life you have built around you.

Keep traveling my friends and take care of YOU!
