How to Make the Most of Your Drive Along the Icefields Parkway

Spoiler: it’s not just a drive, it’s one of the most scenic road trips in the world.
The Icefields Parkway isn’t your average road trip. It’s a 144-mile stretch of towering peaks, turquoise lakes, ancient glaciers, and surprise wildlife sightings around every bend. But to really enjoy it? You’ll want to do a little prep beforehand because cell service drops quickly after Lake Louise, and this is not a place you want to be aimlessly Googling in between stops.
Here’s how to turn your Icefields Parkway drive into a relaxed, awe-filled experience.

Download This App Before You Go
The best tip I can give you? Download the GuideAlong app and purchase the Icefields Parkway self-guided audio tour. Here’s why it’s a game-changer:
The tour plays automatically based on your GPS location, so as soon as you hit the road again after a stop, it picks right up.
It eliminates the “okay, what’s next?” feeling between stops — no more trying to Google things with no service.
The guide pointed out glaciers, geological features, and hidden photo spots we would’ve missed entirely without it.
Important: You’ll need to download the tour while you still have service, so plan to get this ready before you leave for the day. It’s 100% worth it.
Fill Your Tank and Pack Lunch
There are very few services between Lake Louise and Jasper. To avoid unnecessary stress:
Fill up with gas before you leave Lake Louise or Banff.
Pack your own snacks or lunch, especially if you’re picky or want to eat in a scenic spot.
There are a couple of small stops with food, but they’re basic and don't have much.
We packed a simple picnic and were so glad we did. There is something special about sitting on your tailgate enjoying a ham sandwich and a handful of doritos after a beautiful hike.
Wildlife Watch + Memorable Stops
We saw so much wildlife — especially bears! This route is absolutely alive with nature, so keep your camera handy (and remember to stay in your car when appropriate).
Some of our favorite stops included:
Peyto Lake Viewpoint – That unforgettable wolf-head shaped lake with glacier-blue water.
Sunwapta Falls – Don’t miss the short hike down to the lower falls. It’s quiet and beautiful. We stopped at the Sunwapta Falls Resort Hotel Cafe and got their pure maple syrup latte. It was the perfect pick-me-up on a long roadtrip day!
A Note About Jasper
Jasper has definitely been impacted by wildfires, and while parts of it may feel a bit sad, it’s still worth seeing. The mountains are still majestic, and grabbing dinner in town after the long drive was the perfect way to end the day before heading back. It felt grounding to visit, support local businesses, and take in the raw beauty of the area.
Final Thoughts
Driving the Icefields Parkway is something I recommend to every traveler headed to Banff. With the right prep, it’s not just a drive — it’s a day full of once-in-a-lifetime views, spontaneous wildlife sightings, and the kind of peace you only find when you're surrounded by wild places.
If you’re planning a trip to Banff, I’d love to help you build out an itinerary that includes this drive, along with the best hikes, stays, and time-saving tips to make it all feel seamless.
