The Secret to Experiencing Moraine Lake at Sunrise (and Skipping the Stress)

Trust me—this is the moment you’ll be dreaming about forever.

If there’s one must-do moment in Banff, it’s catching sunrise at Moraine Lake. Picture standing on the rockpile, coffee in hand, wrapped in a blanket, watching the Ten Peaks come alive in that dreamy pink-orange glow. It’s pure magic—and surprisingly peaceful, if you plan it right.

Here’s how to make it happen, without the chaos.

Turquoise lake reflecting snowy mountains, surrounded by evergreen trees. Rocky foreground, blue sky with clouds above. Serene and majestic.

Why You Need an Alpine Start

An alpine start just means heading out before dawn, usually between 3:30 and 5:00 AM. For Moraine Lake, it’s the best way to get that quiet, soul-stirring experience before the crowds arrive.

Here’s why timing matters:

  • You can’t drive to Moraine Lake yourself anymore. It’s only accessible by shuttle or guided tour.

  • Sunrise shuttles are limited and fill fast.

  • Early mornings are the only time the lake feels truly still and serene—no lines, no busloads, just that unreal blue water and mountain silence.

How to Book the Shuttle (Without Stressing Out)

You’ll want to head to reservation.pc.gc.ca to secure your spot.

A few quick tips:

  • Create your account ahead of time. Don’t wait until you’re mid-checkout—especially if you’re booking from your phone and prone to closing out of tabs (we’ve all been there).

  • Shuttle spots started opening in April, but there’s still a chance to grab one. A small batch is released 48 hours before the travel date, so check again if your preferred time is sold out.

  • Select the “Alpine Start” option to get to Moraine Lake before sunrise. It’ll give you plenty of time to explore both lakes without feeling rushed.

Bonus: Peaceful Moments at Lake Louise

Another perk? Once you’ve soaked up Moraine Lake, the shuttle can take you to Lake Louise. You’ll arrive before it gets packed, and since you’re already parked at the Lake Louise lakeshore lot, you can come and go as you please.

By 8:00 AM, the area is already buzzing with tourists, so arriving early means:

  • A calm walk along the shoreline

  • Easier photo ops without people in the background

  • Space to simply enjoy the view before the busyness kicks in
