Jackson Hole & Yellowstone Travel Advisor: How I Plan the Perfect Wyoming Vacation

Oct 3
9 min read

If you're planning a Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, or Yellowstone vacation, you've probably already realized there are a LOT of ways to put this trip together.

And honestly, that's one of the reasons I love planning this area for my clients.

I've personally traveled to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone, and Jackson Hole has become such a hotspot lately. Of course it has.

You have the Tetons. The mountains. The cowboys and cowgirls. The hats. The bars. The rodeo. The hiking. Grand Teton National Park right there, with Yellowstone just to the north.

You can spend the weekend wearing a cowboy hat, drinking at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, shopping around Town Square, and pretending you're a cowgirl for a few days.

And I fully support it.

But Jackson Hole is also SO much more than a fun Western weekend.

  • A family vacation

  • A romantic couples getaway

  • A bachelorette or girls' trip

  • A luxury mountain vacation

  • A ski trip

  • The beginning of an incredible Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone road trip

The key is planning the right trip for the season, your interests, and how much time you actually have.

And that's where having a travel advisor who understands this area can make a huge difference.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Jackson Hole?

This is one of the first questions I ask when someone reaches out to me about planning a Jackson Hole vacation: What do you actually want to DO while you're there?

Because when you visit matters.

If you've never been to this part of the country, you may not realize how long winter hangs around. You can't necessarily look at the calendar, see May, and assume everything will be green, warm, and operating on a full summer schedule.

Jackson Hole is a year-round destination, but the experience changes significantly by season. Summer is its most popular season, particularly for travelers combining Jackson Hole with Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

So before I recommend dates, I want to know what kind of Jackson Hole vacation you're picturing.

Planning a Jackson Hole Ski Vacation? Go in Winter

If the entire reason you're traveling to Jackson Hole is to ski or snowboard, winter is obviously where I'd start.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a huge draw during ski season, and you can build an incredible winter vacation around skiing, snowboarding, great restaurants, après-ski, and staying in Teton Village.

But Jackson Hole also has a very real shoulder season. Once ski operations start winding down in the spring, that doesn't mean summer begins the next day.

There's a period when winter activities are ending but many of the classic summer activities haven't started yet. That's why I wouldn't randomly choose an April or May vacation without first looking at exactly what you want to experience.

Memorial Day Weekend: The Beginning of Jackson Hole's Summer Season

One of my favorite times to consider for the beginning of summer is Memorial Day weekend.

This is when Jackson starts transitioning into its summer personality. The Western events start coming back. More seasonal activities begin opening. Golf courses start opening as conditions allow. And Jackson Hole's Old West Days celebrations make Memorial Day weekend especially fun if you're coming for that Western experience.

Just don't confuse the beginning of summer activities with actual summer temperatures. You're still in the mountains.

There can still be snow at higher elevations, mornings and evenings can be cold, and conditions can change quickly. This is one of those destinations where matching your dates to your activities really matters.

June and July: Classic Jackson Hole Summer Vacation

If you want the classic Jackson Hole summer vacation, June and July are hard to beat.

This is when you can start building a trip around everything people picture when they think about summer in Wyoming:

  • Horseback riding

  • Hiking

  • Scenic float trips

  • Whitewater rafting

  • Wildlife tours

  • Grand Teton National Park

  • Yellowstone National Park

  • Long days outside

  • Road trips

  • Patios

  • Rodeo nights

You could easily fill an entire vacation here, which is why I don't like trying to cram Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, AND Yellowstone into three rushed days. This area deserves time.

Where Should You Stay in Jackson Hole?

For first-time visitors, I LOVE staying close to Jackson Town Square. Being able to walk out of your hotel and have restaurants, shops, bars, and the square right there makes the trip so much easier.

One of my favorite classic options is The Antler Inn. I'm not going to call it my luxury recommendation. That's not what it is. It's a classic Jackson option in a fantastic location.

If you're looking for something more elevated, I can look at beautiful boutique and luxury properties such as Hotel Jackson while still keeping you close to downtown.

But this is why I don't recommend the exact same Jackson Hole hotel to everyone. A family vacation needs something different from a bachelorette weekend. A couple looking for luxury may want something completely different from a family prioritizing location and convenience. And someone planning a ski vacation may be better suited to Teton Village.

Your hotel should fit your vacation—not the other way around.

Cowboy Coffee Is a MUST

If you're staying near Town Square, make a stop at Cowboy Coffee Co.—especially the morning after your night at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.

Grab your coffee and breakfast, walk around downtown, and then head out for your day in Grand Teton, Teton Village, or wherever we have planned.

I love finding those little places that become part of the memory of a destination, and Cowboy Coffee is one of those stops for me.

Cowboy hat at night. Cowboy Coffee in the morning. Seems appropriate.

You Have to Experience the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

Can you visit Jackson Hole without going inside the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar? Technically, yes. Would I? No.

It's right by Town Square, has those famous saddle bar stools, and gives you exactly the Western-night-out atmosphere you came to Wyoming for.

Put on the boots. Wear the hat. Lean into it.

This is not the weekend to suddenly decide cowboy hats aren't really you.

And If We're Wearing Cowboy Hats...

Go to Kemo Sabe.

If you're planning a girls' weekend, birthday trip, bachelorette party, or you simply want a really good souvenir from Jackson Hole, customizing a cowboy hat can be such a fun addition.

Yes, you can buy a cowboy hat somewhere else. But going in, choosing your hat, and making it yours is part of the experience. That hat is coming home with a story.

Don't Skip Teton Village

Jackson and Teton Village give you two different experiences, and depending on the trip, I love incorporating both.

Teton Village sits at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. During the summer, one of my favorite things to do is head up the mountain on the Aerial Tram.

Go up. Walk around. Take in the views. Get your pictures.

It's one of those places where you finally realize just how massive this landscape actually is.

And while you're in Teton Village, stop at the Mangy Moose. It's casual, mountainy, and just fits the experience.

How Do You Combine Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park?

This is one of the BEST parts about a Jackson Hole vacation. Grand Teton National Park is right there.

Grand Teton is actually within the Jackson Hole valley, making it very easy to combine time in town with time inside the national park.

You can spend one day shopping, going to the rodeo, having drinks downtown, and wearing your cowboy hat. Then get in the car the next morning and suddenly you're surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the country.

I love working stops such as Jenny Lake into a Grand Teton day and building the route so you aren't simply driving around aimlessly trying to figure out what to see next.

And you don't have to spend six straight days hiking to enjoy Grand Teton. That's why Jackson Hole works so well for families and groups where everyone may want something a little different.

You can have your national park days AND your town days.

Should You Visit Yellowstone From Jackson Hole?

Absolutely—but this is where I see people underestimate the trip.

Yellowstone is not a quick afternoon excursion.

Can you technically take a day trip to Yellowstone from Jackson? Yes. Should you assume that's the best way to experience Yellowstone? Not necessarily.

A full Yellowstone day trip from Jackson can involve roughly six hours of driving and become a 12- to 14-hour day depending on your route and stops.

That's why, when I'm planning a Jackson Hole and Yellowstone vacation, I often want to look at giving Yellowstone at least two days and potentially staying inside or closer to the park for part of the trip.

Yellowstone is enormous. There is so much more to experience than driving up, watching Old Faithful erupt, and turning around.

Where you stay matters. The order you see things matters. And how much time you allow matters.

My Ideal Jackson Hole, Grand Teton & Yellowstone Itinerary

If you have the time, I love building this trip so you experience a little bit of everything without feeling like you're living in the rental car.

  • Start with a few nights near Jackson Town Square.

  • Wake up and grab Cowboy Coffee.

  • Explore downtown, go to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, and see the rodeo.

  • Spend time in Teton Village and ride the tram.

  • Head into Grand Teton National Park and stop at Jenny Lake.

  • Continue north toward Yellowstone National Park.

  • Spend a couple of nights strategically positioned for what you want to see.

That flow makes sense geographically too: Grand Teton and Yellowstone sit next to one another, which makes them a natural combination when the itinerary is planned correctly.

Now THAT is a Western road trip: Jackson, the Tetons, wildlife, Yellowstone, beautiful drives, fun nights out, adventure, and some incredible places to stay along the way.

Don't Want to Drive Yellowstone Yourself?

You don't have to.

There are guided sightseeing options for travelers who want to experience the national parks without being responsible for navigating and driving all day.

And if you want an even bigger Western vacation, we can build that too.

We could create a larger road trip beginning around South Dakota, working through the Black Hills and Wyoming, visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton, spending time in Jackson Hole, and eventually ending around Salt Lake City.

Or we can keep it simple: fly into Jackson Hole, stay downtown, experience Grand Teton, add Yellowstone, and fly home.

There isn't one right Jackson Hole itinerary. There's the itinerary that's right for YOU.

Is Jackson Hole Good for Families, Couples or Groups?

Yes to all three. That's one of my favorite things about this destination.

Jackson Hole Girls' Trip or Bachelorette Party

  • Stay near Town Square

  • Customize cowboy hats

  • Go to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

  • See the rodeo

  • Plan a float trip

  • Have nice dinners

  • Dress up and enjoy your Western weekend

Jackson Hole Couples Getaway

  • Stay somewhere beautiful

  • Slow down the itinerary

  • Have nicer dinners

  • Spend a day in Grand Teton

  • Ride the tram

  • Take a scenic float

  • Have cocktails downtown

Jackson Hole can feel very elevated without losing the Western character that makes you want to go there in the first place.

Jackson Hole Adventure Vacation

  • Hiking

  • Horseback riding

  • Whitewater rafting

  • Wildlife tours

  • Grand Teton

  • Yellowstone

  • Scenic drives

  • Skiing and snowboarding in winter

You could stay busy all week.

Jackson Hole Family Vacation

I LOVE this area for families.

You have national parks, wildlife, the rodeo, rafting options, horseback riding, scenic drives, and plenty of experiences that don't require everyone in the family to be an extreme hiker.

And you can slow it down. You don't need to see every geyser, hike every trail, and drive every road in one vacation.

Sometimes the best part is simply sitting somewhere beautiful and watching for wildlife.

Why Use a Travel Advisor for Jackson Hole & Yellowstone?

This is where the blog needs to answer the question I REALLY want someone searching Google to find.

You can absolutely Google Jackson Hole. You can Google hotels. You can Google Yellowstone. You can pull up a map. But then the questions start.

  • Should we stay in Jackson or Teton Village?

  • How many nights do we need?

  • Should we stay inside Yellowstone?

  • Do we need a rental car?

  • How much time should we spend in Grand Teton?

  • Should we fly round-trip from Jackson Hole or create a one-way itinerary?

  • What activities will actually be operating during our dates?

  • Can we add guided tours if we don't want to drive?

  • What makes sense for kids?

  • Where should we splurge, and where don't we need to?

That's where I come in.

I'm a travel advisor with Good Trip Travel Co., and I personally travel to the destinations I sell whenever I can because I want to understand what the trip actually feels like—not just what it looks like in a brochure.

I've experienced this area myself, and I use that firsthand knowledge when helping my clients plan their own Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone vacations.

I'm not interested in putting you in random hotels, handing you a rental car, and saying,

Have fun!

I want to build the trip around YOU.

  • If you want nightlife, we'll lean into Jackson.

  • If you want luxury, we'll choose the right property.

  • If you want adventure, we'll build it in.

  • If you're traveling with kids, we'll create a pace that actually feels like a family vacation.

  • If Yellowstone is important to you, we'll give it enough time.

  • If you don't want to drive every day, we'll look at guided options.

  • If you want a bigger Western road trip, we'll map it out so the trip actually makes sense.

Jackson Hole is already beautiful. The itinerary is what makes it a really Good Trip.
