Traditional Wedding vs. Destination Wedding: Which Celebration Is Right for You?

When most couples get engaged, one of the first questions they ask is:

Where should we get married?

For some, the answer is a beautiful venue close to home. For others, it’s a church they’ve imagined since childhood, followed by a reception filled with family and friends.

But for many couples, the dream looks a little different.

It’s exchanging vows with the ocean behind them and their toes in the sand. It’s being surrounded by their favorite people—not just for one evening, but for several days of celebrations, meals, adventures and memories together.

As a Destination Wedding Specialist, one of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:

“Destination weddings are so expensive.”

The truth is that destination weddings aren’t automatically more expensive than traditional weddings. Depending on the guest count, resort, package and amount of customization, an all-inclusive destination wedding may actually cost a couple less while turning the celebration into a vacation for everyone attending.

Let’s Talk About the Cost

One of the biggest surprises for many couples is how quickly a traditional wedding budget can grow.

Current estimates place a traditional Des Moines wedding with approximately 125 guests between $33,000 and $40,000. Of course, the final amount varies significantly based on the venue, guest count, season and choices each couple makes.

Think about everything that may go into planning a traditional wedding:

  • Ceremony and reception venues

  • Catering

  • Bar service

  • Photography and videography

  • Flowers

  • Entertainment

  • Tables, chairs and linens

  • Transportation

  • Hotel blocks

  • Invitations

  • Décor

  • Rehearsal dinner

  • Wedding planning

  • Gratuities

The list can feel endless, and every decision adds another line to the budget.

All-inclusive resorts approach weddings differently. Many offer packages that combine several parts of the celebration, potentially including:

  • The ceremony location

  • A reception venue

  • A resort wedding coordinator

  • Wedding cake

  • Cocktail hour

  • Bouquets and boutonnieres

  • Tables, chairs and linens

  • Food and beverage options

  • Basic décor

The exact inclusions and costs vary greatly between resorts. Some packages are designed for intimate ceremonies, while others can be customized into elaborate multi-day events.

A destination wedding isn’t guaranteed to be less expensive. However, bundling services through one resort can simplify both the budget and planning process.

Your Wedding Becomes a Vacation

One of my favorite things about destination weddings has very little to do with the ceremony itself.

It’s everything that happens before and after. Instead of seeing your guests for a few hours on your wedding day, you have several days together.

Imagine arriving at the resort and finding your family gathered by the pool. Your closest friends are enjoying drinks on the beach. Your parents are finally relaxing. Your cousins are heading out on a catamaran excursion.

The morning after the wedding, everyone is still there. Instead of saying goodbye at the end of the reception, you’re meeting for breakfast overlooking the ocean and spending another day together.

Your wedding becomes more than one beautiful day. It becomes a shared experience.

Choosing the Right Resort Matters More Than You Think

If you’ve ever searched for resorts online, you’ve probably noticed something:

Every resort looks beautiful in its marketing photos.

You’ll see clear water, perfect beaches, luxurious rooms and smiling couples. But photos only tell part of the story.

They don’t tell you:

  • Whether the beach is rocky

  • Whether seaweed may be common during your travel dates

  • How consistently good the food and service are

  • Whether guests with mobility concerns can navigate the property

  • Whether there’s enough entertainment for your group

  • How far apart the rooms, restaurants and wedding venues are

  • Whether the resort’s atmosphere matches the celebration you envision

That’s why choosing a destination wedding resort requires more than finding a pretty picture online.

My job isn’t simply to help you find a beautiful resort. It’s to help you find the right resort for you, your wedding and the people traveling with you.

Adults-Only or Family-Friendly?

One of the first questions I ask every couple is simple:

Will children be attending?

That answer shapes the entire resort search.

If children, nieces, nephews or younger cousins are part of the celebration, we’ll look for a resort where they can have just as much fun as the adults. That may mean finding:

  • Kids’ clubs

  • Splash parks

  • Family-friendly pools

  • Daily activities

  • Evening entertainment

  • Spacious accommodations

  • Dining options for different ages and preferences

If you envision a romantic, adults-only celebration, we can focus on resorts that offer a quieter, more elevated atmosphere for couples.

Neither choice is automatically better. The right answer depends on the experience you want to create and the guests you hope will join you.

Who Handles Everyone’s Travel Questions?

One of the biggest concerns couples have is managing travel for an entire group.

“What happens when everyone starts asking us questions?”

The answer is simple: they contact me.

Instead of spending your engagement answering questions about passports, flights, room categories and payment deadlines, your guests have a dedicated travel professional to guide them.

Depending on the group’s needs, I can help coordinate:

  • Resort reservations

  • Flights

  • Airport transfers

  • Travel protection

  • Payment schedules

  • Room upgrades

  • Special requests

  • Group reservations

  • Arrival and departure details

  • Pre- or post-wedding vacation extensions

I also work alongside the resort’s wedding team to help keep guest reservations, room blocks and important travel details organized.

You shouldn’t have to spend your engagement acting as everyone’s travel planner. You should be able to enjoy it.

Why I Plan Destination Weddings Differently

I haven’t only planned destination weddings—I grew up experiencing them.

I attended my first destination wedding when I was 10 years old. Since then, I’ve attended six destination weddings, sometimes as a guest and sometimes as part of the wedding party.

That means I understand these celebrations from multiple perspectives.

I know what it’s like to arrive as a guest, excited for several days away and wondering where everyone will gather, what activities are available and what the resort will really feel like.

I also know what it’s like to stand beside a couple on one of the biggest days of their lives. I’ve experienced the excitement, the wedding-day timeline, the behind-the-scenes moments and the little details that help everything run smoothly.

My perspective has also changed through each stage of my life. As a child, I noticed the pools, beaches and activities.

As a teenager, I looked forward to the entertainment, meeting new people and exploring the destination.

As a young adult, I began appreciating the restaurants, nightlife and uninterrupted time with family and friends.

Now, as a Destination Wedding Specialist, I view the experience through the eyes of the couples and guests I serve. Every Destination Wedding that I plan and book comes with additional expertise and perspective.

When I help a couple choose a resort, I’m not only thinking about the two people getting married.

  • I’m thinking about Grandma, who may have difficulty walking long distances.

  • I’m thinking about the toddlers who need a splash pad.

  • I’m thinking about the teenagers looking for something fun to do after dinner.

  • I’m thinking about the parents who hope to truly relax.

  • I’m thinking about the friends who want great food and nightlife.

Every guest matters because when your guests have a wonderful experience, your celebration becomes even more meaningful.

Firsthand Resort Experience You Can’t Find Online

I’ve personally visited all-inclusive resorts throughout Cancún, Riviera Maya, Cabo San Lucas, Punta Cana and Jamaica—some of the most popular destination wedding locations in Mexico and the Caribbean.

I’ve walked the beaches, toured the wedding venues, eaten at the restaurants, experienced the entertainment and explored the pools and common spaces.

Most importantly, I’ve paid attention to what these resorts feel like beyond the carefully edited marketing photos.

That firsthand experience helps me advise couples on questions such as:

  • Which resorts work well for multigenerational groups?

  • Which properties are known for strong dining options?

  • Which resorts feel lively and energetic?

  • Which ones offer a quieter, more romantic atmosphere?

  • Which properties are easier for guests to navigate?

  • Which wedding venues are even more impressive in person?

That knowledge allows me to recommend resorts based on the experience a couple wants to create—not simply on which property looks prettiest online.

A Destination Wedding Is More Than a Wedding

At the end of the day, a destination wedding isn’t only about choosing a beautiful place to get married. It’s about slowing down and spending meaningful time with the people who matter most.

Years from now, your guests may not remember the color of your napkins, every centerpiece or each song the DJ played.

But they’ll remember laughing together by the pool.

They’ll remember watching the sunset after your ceremony.

They’ll remember exploring a new destination, sharing meals and having conversations that might never happen during a traditional one-day celebration.

Those are the moments that make a destination wedding so special.

If you’re dreaming about a wedding that’s equal parts celebration and vacation, I’d love to help you find the right destination, choose a resort that works for your entire group and coordinate the travel details from beginning to end.
