Travel Authentically.

Updated: Apr 20, 2023

In today's world, it's easy to get caught up in the idea of projecting a certain image to the world. With social media and other platforms, there is an immense pressure to present oneself as successful, adventurous, and well-traveled. However, amidst all of this, we sometimes forget to truly enjoy the experiences that we are having and be true to ourselves.

Travel is a perfect example of this phenomenon. People often travel to tick off boxes on their bucket list or to impress others with exotic destinations. While there's nothing inherently wrong with this approach, it can often lead to a superficial experience that fails to capture the essence of a place or leave a lasting impact.

It's important to travel in a way that feels authentic to you. This means taking the time to understand what you truly enjoy and what matters most to you. It may be that you prefer off-the-beaten-path destinations, or perhaps you prefer to immerse yourself in local culture rather than focusing solely on tourist attractions. Whatever your preference, it's important to be true to yourself and to plan a trip that aligns with your values and interests.

Here are some tips on how to plan a trip that is an authentic experience for YOU!

Step 1: Define Your Purpose

Before you start planning your trip, it's important to define your purpose. What do you hope to gain from this experience? Is it to relax and recharge, to learn about a new culture, to challenge yourself, or to simply have fun? Once you have a clear purpose in mind, you can start planning your trip accordingly.

Step 2: Research Your Destination

Once you have defined your purpose, it's time to research your destination. This includes learning about the local culture, customs, and traditions, as well as the best places to stay, eat, and visit. You can do this by reading travel guides, speaking to travel advisors that specialize in your destination, browsing travel blogs, or talking to locals who have been there before. By doing your research, you'll be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and have a more authentic experience.

Step 3: Create an Itinerary

Once you have done your research, it's time to create an itinerary. This should include the places you want to visit, the activities you want to do, and the food you want to try. However, it's important to leave some room for spontaneity and flexibility. Some of my favorite travel experiences of all time have happened when I've stumbled upon something unexpected.

Step 4: Connect with Locals

One of the best ways to have an authentic travel experience is to connect with locals. This can be done by staying in a homestay, taking a cooking class, or simply striking up a conversation with a local. By connecting with locals, you'll be able to learn about their culture and way of life, and gain a new perspective on the world. My goal with every trip I take is to bring home a story from someone I've met along the way. I always like to ask, "what is your perception about Americans/ Iowans." I love to hear other perspectives!

Step 5: Embrace the Unexpected

Finally, it's important to embrace the unexpected. Traveling is full of surprises, and some of the best experiences happen when things don't go according to plan. Whether it's getting lost in a new city or trying a new food, embrace the unexpected and be open to new experiences. Sometimes going without a plan - is the best plan on all!

I believe that travel is not just about seeing the world, but also about understanding ourselves and our place in the world. By being true to ourselves and our values, we can create transformative travel experiences that leave a lasting impact and bring us closer to the people and places we visit.
