One of the biggest decisions when planning a Disneyland vacation is where to stay.

Should you pay more to stay at one of the three official Disneyland Resort hotels, or choose one of the many nearby Good Neighbor Hotels?

Unlike Walt Disney World in Florida, Disneyland Resort is compact and surrounded by hotels. Some Good Neighbor Hotels are located directly across the street from the theme park entrance, while certain official Disney hotels require a longer walk through Downtown Disney.

That means staying “on-site” at Disneyland does not automatically mean you will have the shortest walk to the parks.

Good Neighbor options range from affordable hotels with basic accommodations to full-service resorts and family suites with bunk beds, kitchenettes, complimentary breakfast or waterparks.

The experience can vary greatly from one property to another, so it is important to compare more than the room rate.

Consider:

• Walking distance to the park security entrance

• Room size and bed configuration

• Breakfast options

• Pool and waterpark facilities

• Parking or resort fees

• Shuttle availability

How Much More Does It Cost to Stay at a Disneyland Resort Hotel?

The difference can be substantial.

As an example, consider a three-night vacation for a family of four that includes two-day park tickets and Lightning Lane access:

• Disneyland Resort hotel package: approximately $4,700

• Good Neighbor Hotel package: approximately $3,400

• Difference: approximately $1,300

That means the Disney hotel costs approximately:

Benefits of Staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel

A More Immersive Disney Experience

The greatest benefit is the atmosphere.

At a Disneyland Resort hotel, the Disney experience continues after you leave the parks. The rooms, pools, landscaping, music, dining and hotel activities are designed to feel like an extension of your vacation.

The Disneyland Hotel celebrates the history and nostalgia of Disneyland. Pixar Place Hotel features Pixar-inspired design, while the Grand Californian offers an upscale Craftsman-style resort experience.

For a first visit, milestone celebration or once-in-a-lifetime family vacation, the emotional value of staying inside the Disney bubble may be worth the premium.

A Complimentary Lightning Lane Attraction Entry

Registered guests staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel receive one entry to one eligible Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction during their hotel stay.

This is one attraction entry per registered guest, per reservation—not one additional Lightning Lane every day. It also does not include Lightning Lane Single Pass attractions.

For a family of four, this provides four individual attraction entries.

It is a helpful perk, especially if the family wants to ride a favorite attraction again or use the entry when regular Lightning Lane return times are limited. However, it is not a benefit that would independently justify paying hundreds of dollars more per night.

Preferred Access to Select Hotel Dining Reservations

Disneyland Resort hotel guests receive preferred access to a limited number of reservations at select table-service restaurants located within the Disney hotels.

This may be valuable if a particular hotel restaurant is important to your trip, but reservations are still subject to availability.

You also do not have to stay at a Disney hotel to dine there. Good Neighbor Hotel guests can still make reservations at restaurants such as Goofy’s Kitchen and visit the Disneyland Resort hotels.

Exclusive Resort Activities and Amenities

Disneyland Resort hotels may offer seasonal celebrations, fitness classes, hotel activities and other special experiences. Some activities are complimentary, while others may require an additional fee.

These experiences are most valuable when you have enough time to enjoy the hotel.

For a short visit with two full park days, you may spend very little time at the resort beyond sleeping and getting ready. In that situation, it can be difficult to receive meaningful value from the additional amenities.

Convenient Access to Downtown Disney

The Disneyland Hotel is located at the western end of Downtown Disney, making it easy to enjoy the district’s dining, shopping and entertainment.

The Grand Californian also has excellent access to Downtown Disney, and its location is especially convenient for Disney California Adventure.

This can be helpful on arrival day, departure day or an evening when you are not visiting a theme park.

Special Theme Park Access Points

Guests of the Grand Californian and Pixar Place Hotel have convenient access to Disney California Adventure through an entrance located near the Grand Californian’s pool area.

Disneyland Hotel guests can use the Downtown Disney Monorail station for transportation into Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park. Valid park admission and reservations are still required.

The Monorail can be fun and convenient, but it should not be treated as guaranteed transportation. It may experience waits, temporary closures or operating changes, and it does not provide direct transportation into Disney California Adventure.

How Close Are Good Neighbor Hotels to Disneyland?

This is where Disneyland differs significantly from Walt Disney World.

Many Good Neighbor Hotels are located along Harbor Boulevard, directly across the street from the main pedestrian entrance to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.

Some hotels are only a few minutes from security. Others are two blocks away, a 10- to 20-minute walk or approximately one mile from the entrance. Some farther hotels offer shuttle transportation or access to Anaheim Resort Transportation.

For example, Disney identifies some Good Neighbor Hotels as being across the street from the Disneyland Resort, while others are listed as one-half mile to one mile away.

Therefore, the term “Good Neighbor Hotel” does not describe one specific distance or hotel experience.

Always look at the hotel’s location in relation to the actual pedestrian security entrance—not simply its distance from the edge of Disneyland Resort property.

Is an On-Site Disney Hotel Always Closer to the Park Entrances?

No.

This is one of the most important things travelers should understand.

The main entrances to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure face each other across a central esplanade. The Harbor Boulevard pedestrian entrance provides direct access to this area.

Several Good Neighbor Hotels are located across Harbor Boulevard and may offer a shorter walk to the main park gates than the Disneyland Hotel.

The Disneyland Hotel is located at the opposite end of Downtown Disney. Guests generally walk through Downtown Disney to reach the central entrances or use the Monorail to enter Disneyland Park.

Disney describes the Disneyland Hotel as being steps from Downtown Disney and a short stroll from both parks, but travelers should not assume it is closer to the gates than every off-site hotel.

The Grand Californian is the exception. It offers one of the most convenient locations at Disneyland Resort, particularly for Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney.

Benefits of Choosing a Good Neighbor Hotel

Significant Savings

The most obvious benefit is the price.

Saving $1,300 on a three-night vacation is not a minor difference. That money can be used to enhance the vacation in other ways—or simply keep the trip within a comfortable budget.

Possible uses for the savings include:

For families planning to leave early, spend the entire day in the parks and return after nighttime entertainment, this may be more practical than paying for a themed hotel they have little time to enjoy.

Larger or More Functional Rooms

Many Good Neighbor Hotels offer room arrangements designed specifically for families.

Depending on the hotel, these may include:

• Bunk beds

• Separate sleeping areas

• Two bathrooms or multiple showers

• Kitchenettes

• Microwaves

• Larger refrigerators

• Family suites

• Complimentary breakfast

A themed Disney room may feel more magical, but a larger room with separate beds and multiple bathroom spaces may be more useful for a family of four getting ready for an early park morning.

Family-Friendly Pools and Waterparks

Some Good Neighbor Hotels have splash pads, waterslides, water playgrounds or large family pools.

A Disney hotel does not automatically have the best pool for every child. Compare the actual amenities rather than assuming the higher-priced hotel provides the stronger pool experience.

Hotel Loyalty Benefits

Travelers may also be able to earn or redeem points with familiar hotel brands.

Depending on the property and booking method, guests may receive benefits through Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, IHG One Rewards or another loyalty program.

Potential Drawbacks of a Good Neighbor Hotel

Good Neighbor Hotels do not provide the same level of Disney immersion.

Once you leave Disneyland Resort, you may be walking along a busy city street rather than through landscaped resort grounds and Downtown Disney.

Other potential considerations include:

• Parking fees

• Resort fees

• Paid shuttle service

• Less elaborate theming

• Fewer resort activities

• Limited housekeeping

• Longer walks at certain properties

• Having to cross busy intersections

• No Disney hotel-exclusive Lightning Lane entry

When Is a Disneyland Resort Hotel Worth the Extra Cost?

An on-site Disney hotel may be worth the premium when:

• Staying at the hotel is part of the family’s dream

• You are celebrating a birthday, honeymoon, anniversary or milestone

• This may be your family’s only Disneyland vacation

• You plan to spend meaningful time at the pool or resort

• You have an arrival day, departure day or non-park day to enjoy the hotel

• Easy access to Downtown Disney is a priority

• You value immersive theming and Disney service

• The Grand Californian’s location is especially important

• The price difference comfortably fits within your budget

In those situations, the hotel is not simply a place to sleep. It is one of the vacation experiences.

When Is a Good Neighbor Hotel the Better Choice?

A Good Neighbor Hotel may be the better value when:

• You plan to spend nearly every waking hour in the parks

• You are visiting for only two or three nights

• You want the shortest possible walk to the Harbor Boulevard entrance

• Your family needs more room or a specific bed configuration

• Complimentary breakfast or a kitchenette would be helpful

• The children would enjoy a waterpark-style hotel

• You already purchased Lightning Lane Multi Pass

• The Disney hotel premium would limit dining, activities or other parts of the trip

• You would rather extend the vacation or save the money for another trip

Our Honest Recommendation

For a short three-night stay with two park days, a well-located Good Neighbor Hotel will often provide the better overall value.

You may be able to stay within a short walk of both park entrances, have a larger or more functional room and save more than $1,000.

The official Disneyland Resort hotels provide a more immersive and memorable environment, but the practical on-site benefits are relatively limited compared with the price difference—especially when the family already has Lightning Lane access and will spend most of the trip inside the parks.

However, value is not always measured only in dollars.

For some families, walking into a fully themed Disney hotel, swimming in a Disney pool and remaining immersed in the magic throughout the entire vacation is worth the additional cost.

For others, the best decision is to stay across the street, visit the Disney hotels for a character meal or evening drink and use the savings to create more experiences throughout the trip.
