How to Choose the Right European River Cruise for Your Travel Style

If you have started researching a European river cruise, you have probably already discovered there are a LOT of choices. Rhine or Danube? Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Uniworld, Scenic, Tauck? Why does one cruise cost so much more than another when they seem to visit many of the same places?

Here is the most important thing I can tell you:

There is no single “best” river cruise line. There is only the river cruise that is the best fit for YOU.

Finding that fit is one of my favorite parts of planning river cruises for my clients.

European River Cruises Are Not One Size Fits All

At first glance, river cruise companies can look pretty similar. Beautiful ships, European cities, included meals, shore excursions, castles, vineyards and plenty of wine. Sign me up, right?!

But the actual experiences can be VERY different.

Some river cruise lines are fantastic for active travelers who want biking, hiking and multiple excursion choices. Others focus more on luxury, exceptional food and wine, elevated service or a slower pace. Some include almost everything in the cruise fare, while others allow you to choose and pay for the extras that matter to you.

Even the ships themselves can have very different personalities.

This is why I don't automatically recommend the most recognizable river cruise company or whichever itinerary has the lowest price. I want to know how you like to travel first.

Do you love food and wine? Are you active? Do you want lots of organized excursions or time to explore on your own? Is your stateroom really important to you? Do you want a casual, social atmosphere or something more luxurious? Are there mobility concerns we need to consider?

Those answers are what start pointing me toward the right river, itinerary, ship and cruise company for you.

My Firsthand River Cruise Experience

One of the most valuable experiences I've had as a travel advisor was attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Vienna with the American Society of Travel Advisors.

During the expo, I had the opportunity to personally tour 16 different river cruise ships representing 10 different river cruise companies.

I wasn't simply looking at photos or sitting through presentations. I was onboard the ships, walking through staterooms, seeing the restaurants and lounges, comparing layouts and experiencing firsthand what made each company different.

Even more importantly, I had the opportunity to spend time with management teams and representatives from these river cruise companies. I was able to ask questions, learn what sets their product apart and better understand the type of traveler each experience is designed for.

When you can walk off one ship and directly onto another, those differences become MUCH easier to see.

Amadeus river boat docked in Vienna while cruising the Danube River.

I have also experienced river cruising as a passenger, sailing the Danube River from Vienna to Budapest. There is something pretty incredible about waking up onboard, watching Europe pass outside your window, stepping off the ship to explore for the day and returning to your floating hotel that evening.

Combining my own river cruise experience with the opportunity to compare so many ships and companies firsthand completely changed how I help my clients choose their river cruises.

How I Match Clients With the Right River Cruise

Sometimes a client comes to me knowing exactly what they want. Maybe they want to cruise the Rhine, see Budapest and Vienna along the Danube, experience Portugal's Douro Valley or visit Europe's Christmas markets.

Other times I hear, “Hildy, I know I want to take a river cruise in Europe. I have absolutely no idea where.”

That's okay too!

You do NOT need to figure all of this out before contacting me. Helping you figure it out is part of my job.

I want to know what your favorite vacations have been and why you loved them. I want to know whether you prefer busy sightseeing days or a little more downtime. Would you enjoy biking through vineyards? Is food and wine a huge part of your vacation? Do you love history? Would you rather take a traditional city tour or do something more immersive?

Then we talk about your budget, stateroom preferences, mobility needs, activity level and how much you want included in your cruise fare.

Sometimes one small answer completely changes the cruise line or itinerary I would recommend.

My job isn't simply to find you a good river cruise. I want to find the one where you step onboard and think, “YES. This is exactly what I wanted.”

Price Matters, But So Does Value

When comparing European river cruises, don't look only at the price at the bottom of the page.

One cruise might initially cost more but include more excursions, beverages, gratuities, transfers or other experiences. Another might have a lower starting price and allow you to pay only for the extras you want.

Neither approach is necessarily better.

The question is: Which one gives YOU the best value?

I don't want my clients paying thousands more for inclusions they don't care about. I also don't want them choosing the least expensive option only to discover later that it doesn't provide the experience they really wanted.

That's where knowing the differences between river cruise companies becomes incredibly important.
