Would You Spend Halloween in Transylvania? How I’d Plan a Dracula-Inspired Trip to Romania

I have a question.

How committed are you to Halloween?

Because we could carve pumpkins at home.

Or…we could go to Transylvania. 🧛

I recently came across an actual guided tour that spends Halloween in Transylvania—including a Halloween celebration at Bran Castle—and immediately thought, THIS is an Enchanted Escape.

Castles. Medieval towns. The Carpathian Mountains. Cobblestone streets. Dracula lore. A Halloween party at the castle everyone calls “Dracula’s Castle.”

I mean…come on.

But the more I looked into the itinerary, the more I realized something else: I’d want to take this trip even without the Dracula part.

And that’s exactly what I want my Enchanted Escapes to be.

First, What Exactly Is an Enchanted Escape?

If you’re new here, Enchanted Escapes are something I’ve been working on at Good Trip that combines two things I love: books and travel.

The idea isn’t to spend an entire vacation pretending you’re living inside a fictional world.

Instead, we use the stories we love as inspiration for real trips.

Sometimes that means visiting actual filming locations. Sometimes it’s following the setting or history behind a book. And sometimes it’s finding the castles, medieval cities, mountains and landscapes that give you that same I swear I’ve read about this place before feeling.

A Dracula-inspired trip through Romania fits perfectly.

Especially if we go at Halloween.

Okay, But Did Dracula Actually Live at Bran Castle?

Before I send everyone to Romania in capes, we need a little history lesson.

Count Dracula is fictional.

Bram Stoker published Dracula in 1897, and despite setting part of his story in Transylvania, Stoker never actually visited Romania.

Then there’s Vlad III, better known as Vlad the Impaler, a very real 15th-century ruler of Wallachia whose history eventually became tangled up with the Dracula story.

And finally, there’s Bran Castle, the dramatic medieval castle in Transylvania that has become known around the world as “Dracula’s Castle.”

They’re connected—but not in the simple Dracula lived here way you might expect.

Even Bran Castle’s own historical information makes a point of separating the fictional Count Dracula from Vlad the Impaler. The castle’s connection to Vlad is fairly limited, while its appearance happens to fit remarkably well with descriptions associated with Dracula’s fictional Transylvanian castle.

Over time, history, literature, legend and tourism have all gotten mixed together.

And personally?

I think that makes the trip more interesting.

You can have fun with the vampire lore while also learning the real history behind these places.

What Would Halloween in Transylvania Actually Look Like?

This is the part that made me want to write this article in the first place.

I found an eight-day guided Romania tour specifically built around Halloween in Transylvania. It starts and ends in Bucharest, travels with a group of up to 15 people and currently has a 2027 departure scheduled for October 26 through November 2.

And we’re not just driving directly to Bran Castle, throwing on vampire teeth and coming home.

This is an actual Romania vacation.

Start in Bucharest

The trip begins in Romania’s capital, where you’d have time to explore Bucharest and start learning some of the history behind the legends you’re about to encounter.

From there, you head toward the Carpathian Mountains.

And this is where things start getting very Enchanted Escapes.

Head Into the Carpathians

The itinerary travels toward Sibiu, with plans to cross the Carpathians via the Transfăgărășan Highway when weather allows.

There’s also a stop at Poenari Castle, a ruined fortress with a much stronger historical connection to Vlad the Impaler than Bran Castle has.

Fair warning: the itinerary notes 1,480 steps to reach it.

Apparently we are working for our Dracula experience. 😂

Then it’s on to Sibiu, a medieval city filled with historic squares, churches, passages and the famous Bridge of Lies.

And we’re just getting started.

Castles, Medieval Villages and Sighișoara at Night

The next stretch might actually be my favorite part of this itinerary.

You visit Corvin Castle, an enormous Gothic castle complete with towers, a drawbridge and courtyards that look exactly like they belong in the kind of book I would be reading.

Then there’s Biertan and its fortified church before continuing to Sighișoara, one of Transylvania’s beautifully preserved medieval citadels.

The tour includes an evening walk through Sighișoara’s cobblestone streets and past its old towers and fortifications.

This is what I mean when I say the trip doesn’t need Dracula to be interesting.

I’m already sold.

But then we get to Halloween.

Yes, You Can Actually Spend Halloween at “Dracula’s Castle”

After exploring Brașov, the itinerary heads to Bran.

And on Halloween night?

Bran Castle.

This isn’t just something a tour company invented for its itinerary, either. Bran Castle hosts special Halloween programming, and the guided tour I found includes admission to the Halloween celebration as part of the trip.

I feel like if we’re going to commit to a Halloween trip to Transylvania, this is the level of commitment I’m looking for.

Bring the costume.

And Then You Wake Up and Keep Exploring Romania

One of my favorite things about this particular itinerary is that Halloween isn’t the finale.

The next day is intentionally slower—which seems wise—with a visit to Peleș Castle, the former royal residence tucked into the Carpathian Mountains near Sinaia.

That evening, you return to Bran for a campfire dinner and a tasting of pălincă, a traditional Romanian fruit brandy.

And according to the tour’s list of included experiences, this isn’t just any campfire.

It’s a “campfire to banish all the evil spirits.”

Obviously.

I mean, we just spent Halloween at Dracula’s Castle. I’m not taking any chances. 😂

The trip eventually continues to Cantacuzino Castle before returning to Bucharest.

So by the end of eight days, you’ve gotten Dracula lore and Halloween, but you’ve also experienced several Romanian cities, multiple castles, mountain scenery, local food and a LOT of history.

That’s the part that makes me want to recommend it.

What If I Love This Idea…But Not Enough to Spend Halloween at Dracula’s Castle?

That’s okay, too.

You don’t have to travel over Halloween to make Romania an Enchanted Escape.

There are guided itineraries that travel through Romania and Transylvania at other times of year, including options that combine Romania with Hungary and end in Budapest.

That could actually be the better fit if you’re less “I packed my vampire costume” and more “Give me medieval towns, castles and really cool European history.”

And this is where I think guided travel makes a lot of sense, and where working with a travel agent can make a trip like this much easier.

Romania probably isn’t the first European destination most people feel comfortable piecing together on their own. A guided itinerary takes care of transportation between all these places, hotels, sightseeing logistics and guides who can explain what you’re actually looking at.

You get to enjoy the story without having to figure out how to get from castle number three to medieval village number four.

That’s my kind of vacation planning.

Who Would I Send on This Trip?

You definitely don’t have to be a hardcore Dracula fan.

I’d look at something like this for someone who loves:

• Halloween and spooky season

• Gothic castles and medieval towns

• History and folklore

• Dracula or vampire stories

• Moody mountain scenery

• Guided trips where the logistics are already handled

• Vacations that are a little different from what everyone else is doing

• 
  

And obviously, my fellow fantasy and romantasy readers who see the phrase “Gothic castle in the Carpathian Mountains” and don’t really need me to continue explaining.

I know my people. 😂

This Is Exactly Why I’m Creating Enchanted Escapes

When I first started thinking about Enchanted Escapes, this is what I had in mind.

Not just trips about books.

Trips that make you feel something you love about them.

Maybe Harry Potter sends us through England and Scotland.

Maybe Dracula takes us into Transylvania.

Maybe your favorite fantasy novel has you dreaming about medieval villages, castles and mountains somewhere else entirely.

The story gets us interested.

The destination makes the trip worth taking.

And I really love that distinction.

Because you don’t need eight days of Dracula attractions to have a Dracula-inspired vacation. You can go to Romania, experience its actual history and culture, see some incredible places—and have a ridiculous amount of fun leaning into the vampire lore while you’re there.

Especially on Halloween.
