A Relaxing Carmel-by-the-Sea Getaway: Refuge Spa, Mission Ranch & the California Coast
Some trips are about seeing and doing as much as possible. This isn't one of them.
When we lived in Northern California, Carmel-by-the-Sea was one of my favorite places to get away. I've done this trip with friends, and it's such a fun combination of relaxing, really good food, beautiful scenery and plenty of time to simply enjoy being together.
It would make a great girls' trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea, a mother-daughter weekend, couples' getaway or a few relaxing days away with friends.
And if I were choosing when to go? October is my favorite.
Why I Love Carmel-by-the-Sea in October
October has always been one of my favorite times along the Northern California coast. Fall can bring warmer days and less of the thick coastal fog that you often experience during the summer months.
Of course, California coastal weather is never guaranteed, but if I were planning this getaway for myself again, October would be my pick.
It's perfect weather for walking around downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, spending time along Carmel Beach, exploring 17-Mile Drive and simply slowing down for a few days.
Start Your Weekend at Refuge Spa
Start your getaway with a massage at Refuge in Carmel Valley.
You'll change into a cozy robe, grab some water and settle in for an incredible massage. But don't get dressed and leave when it's over. You'll want plenty of time afterward because that's one of the best parts of the Refuge experience.
Head outside and move between the cold, cool, warm and hot water baths. Spend some time in the Himalayan salt room, find a spot near one of the fire pits or grab a book and just relax surrounded by nature.
And one of my favorite parts?
No talking.
It's quiet.
That might sound like an odd recommendation for a girls' trip, but it's actually wonderful. Nobody has to talk about work, kids, schedules or what you're doing next. You're together, but you get to completely relax and enjoy the silence for a while.

Note: Refuge is currently completing scheduled improvements to its outdoor relaxation area, with reopening listed for November 1, 2026, so check current availability and amenities when planning your visit.
Stay at Historic Mission Ranch
After your spa day, head to Mission Ranch in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Mission Ranch isn't a big, modern resort, and that's part of why I love it. The rooms are cute and quaint, with more of a bed-and-breakfast feel.
But the setting is really what makes it special.
The restaurant overlooks wide green fields where sheep roam, and off in the distance you can see the Pacific Ocean and waves crashing along the shore. It's such a beautiful place to sit, have dinner and enjoy the view.

There's also an interesting story behind Mission Ranch. The historic property dates back to the 1800s and was once threatened by a proposed condominium development. Clint Eastwood purchased Mission Ranch in 1986, saving the property from development and later restoring it. Today, it remains a small 31-room property spread across several buildings on 22 acres.
It's one of those places where the setting is part of the experience.

Spend Some Time Wandering Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea
One of my favorite things to do in Carmel is simply stroll around downtown.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is filled with quaint shops, galleries and restaurants, and you really don't need much of an agenda. Walk around, pop into places that catch your attention and find somewhere good for lunch or dinner.
As a professional photographer, one of my personal favorites is seeing the photography of Ansel Adams. Adams had a longtime connection to Carmel and made his home in the area, so I always enjoy seeing his work when I'm there.
Give me a quiet spa, a great restaurant, a bookstore or gallery, and Ansel Adams photographs, and I'm pretty happy.
That's the kind of afternoon I love in Carmel.
Walk Carmel Beach
Make your way down to Carmel Beach while you're there. It's a beautiful stretch of the California coast and a great place to walk, sit for a while or watch the waves.
Then head back downtown for dinner. There are so many restaurants tucked throughout the walkable downtown area, including plenty of opportunities for fresh seafood and a great meal with friends.
I wouldn't necessarily decide every restaurant before you arrive either. Sometimes it's fun to walk around, look at menus and choose whatever sounds good that night.
Drive 17-Mile Drive & Visit Pebble Beach
If you have another day, take some time to explore the coastline around Pebble Beach and 17-Mile Drive.
Even if you don't golf, this area is worth seeing. Drive the route, stop at the overlooks and give yourself time to enjoy the coastline instead of rushing through it.
And if you do love golf, Pebble Beach is right there, so this getaway could work especially well for a couple who doesn't necessarily want to spend every minute doing the same thing.
Don't Over-Plan This Carmel Weekend
This is probably my biggest recommendation for this trip.
Don't turn a relaxing Carmel-by-the-Sea getaway into an itinerary where you have somewhere to be every hour.
Book the things that matter, especially your spa treatments and accommodations, and then leave some room.
Have a great meal. Walk on the beach. Shop downtown. Stop in a gallery. Drive along the coast. Read a book. Sit at Mission Ranch and watch the sheep.
The whole point is to come home feeling like you actually had a break.
A California Getaway I'd Happily Do Again
I've personally done this getaway, and it's one I'd absolutely do again. Check out my Instagram reel here.
It's an easy idea for a girls' weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a couples' getaway, mother-daughter trip or a few days away with friends. There's enough to do that you won't be bored, but you also don't need to do much at all.
And sometimes that's exactly the kind of vacation you need.
If you're thinking about a Carmel-by-the-Sea vacation, California girls' trip or relaxing California coastal getaway, I'd love to help you plan it. We can build the trip around what you enjoy and figure out how much you actually want to do while you're there.
